Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP) Employment Specialist
2 Positions: 1 Located in New Haven and 1 located in New London
VEVRAA Federal Contractor: Priority Referrals of Protected Veterans Requested.
Purpose and Functions
The employment specialist assists clients in obtaining employment and/or furthering their career. Support includes activities associated with engagement, job development and job retention. The employment specialist works directly with the client; his/her support team, the Pathways to Independence team, Work Place and its agents, and local businesses in the greater New Haven area and New London areas.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide Veterans and non-veterans with supported employment services. Coordinate and attend meetings with client, support team and community and or local business providers as necessary or assigned. Engage the services of other agencies as appropriate to meet client needs. Engages clients and establishes trusting, collaborative relationships directed toward the goal of competitive employment. Assess client's employment functioning on an ongoing basis utilizing background information and work experiences. Provide outreach, assessment, intake and follow-up services to enhance employment and retention. Develop a job driven employment and training service plan for each veteran. Provide education and support to employers as agreed upon by clients that may include negotiating job accommodations and follow-along contact with the employer. Managing a caseload of 30 unduplicated Veteran clients per annum. Other related duties as assigned including but not limited to monthly meetings with the HVRP Grant Manager.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Associates degree and 2-3 years' experience in job development required. Responsible and reliable, able to conduct oneself in a professional manner while maintaining client confidentiality and respecting proper relationship boundaries. Able to employ problem and conflict resolution skills. Well-developed oral, written, communication, organizational, interpersonal and computer skills a must with a demonstrated history of cultural sensitivity and knowledge of and respect for persons suffering with mental health and substance use disorder. Valid Connecticut Drivers License required and a satisfactory driving record. Must possess an understanding of issues relating to homelessness, Veterans, knowledge of group dynamics, knowledge of principles of supported employment, knowledge of addiction, mental health, recovery and Harm Reduction. Ability to track all program activities via web-based reporting system. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly: Outlook, Word and Excel. Ability to interact with the public, local businesses and employers with and on behalf of the client is essential.
Supervised by: Director of Housing Services
Salary: $17.30 to $19.23 per hour or current rate of pay plus excellent benefits
Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with some flexibility
