LEAD Community Engagement Specialist

Under the direction of the Senior Manager of Outreach & Engagement, the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) Community Engagement Specialist will work closely and collaborate with law enforcement, community providers, agency staff, the LEAD steering committee and the community to outreach and assist persons engaged in low-level drug offenses to participate in the LEAD program as an alternative to arrest.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
High School graduate or GED; Excellent organizational and time management skills with a deadline oriented mindset; Strong written and oral communication skills employing the English language; Able to function in a community setting working within a multi-disciplinary team ; Familiar with criminal justice system and community resources in New Haven ; Able to engage, manage, motivate, and support clients/participants; Familiar with mental health, substance abuse and dual diagnosis issues and group dynamics; Complete knowledge base of all aspects of the delivery of person-centered individualized recovery plans; Able to meet all documentation requirements; Knowledgeable about peer support, crisis intervention, boundaries, confidentiality, universal precautions, harm reduction, trauma informed care, motivational interviewing and recovery based supports both traditional and non-traditional; Valid drivers' license with a good driving history. Associates or Bachelor's Degree; Recovery Support Specialist/Peer training; “Lived” experience; Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred.
Engage and assess participants at first contact (if possible) to determine needs and develop a plan to meet immediate needs; Outreach participants who are referred after hours in order to meet needs and begin LEAD engagement process; Complete LEAD intake and assessment and all other documentation/charting required; Develop individualized person-centered recovery plans; Accompany participants to appointments and meetings as required to ensure seamless connection and to avoid premature drop out providing transportation as appropriate; Coordinate and collaborate with other agencies, social service providers and other resources and strategies to engage participants into services; Communicate daily with LEAD law enforcement to update on participant status; Assist participants with accessing services and resources including substance use treatment, mental health treatment, medical care, entitlements, social supports, peer supports, food, clothing, personal care items, community resources, recovery supports, mentors, self-help groups, legal services, basic needs, faith-based activities, recreation and civic activities; Other related duties as assigned.
Supervised by: Senior Manager of Outreach Services
Salary Range: $17.30 to $19.23 per hour plus excellent benefits
Schedule: Monday – Friday (40 hours; flexible schedule, some evenings)
