DMHAS SOAR Benefits Specialist

Purpose and Functions
Under the direction of the Middlesex Emergency Services Program Manager, the SOAR Benefits Specialist must work in the community and meet individuals experiencing homelessness where they are, including in the woods, under bridges, and in abandoned houses.


Duties and Responsibilities
Work with referral sources and community partners to identify applicants through team meetings, outreach, and referrals. Complete interviews with individuals to gather information to complete SSI/SSDI applications. Gather medical records and other information to complete SSI/SSDI applications. Write SOAR Medical Summary Reports for individual applications. Accompany individuals to appointments at the Social Security Administration. Coordinate visits to medical doctors, psychiatrists, and other specialists to obtain evidence for the application. Enter all SOAR applicant data into SOAR Works OAT and Outcomes. Attend weekly and monthly agency, program, and network meetings. Attend any trainings/certifications as required by the state. Other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in human services related field; working knowledge of behavioral health service models, including the recovery model; and trauma informed service delivery; strong familiarity with Social Security Administration processes for applying for federal benefits. Minimum 2 years of experience in a professional work environment with proven ability to communicate both verbally and in writing; the ability to collaborate successfully with others; demonstrated time-management and organizational skills; and the ability to meet deadlines and focus on results. Successful completion of the SOAR online training course through SSA within 30 days of hire. Advanced understanding and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including MS Outlook, Access, Excel and Word. Driver’s license with acceptable driving history required.


Supervised by: Middlesex Emergency Services Program Manager
Salary: $17.30 to $19.23 per hour based upon education and experience plus excellent benefits
Schedule: Monday thru Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with some flexibility
