SSVF Employment Specialist

Under the direction of Employment and Benefits Manager, the SSVF Employment Specialist helps clients obtain employment and further their career.  Support activities include engagement, job development, and job retention.  The employment specialist works directly with the client, his or her support team, the Pathways to Independence team, The American Jobs Center, and local businesses in the greater New Haven area.


Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

Associates degree and 2-3 years’ experience in job development. Responsible and reliable, able to conduct oneself professionally while maintaining client confidentiality and respecting proper relationship boundaries. Demonstrated history of cultural sensitivity and knowledge of and respect for persons suffering from mental health and substance use disorders. Must possess an understanding of issues relating to homelessness, Veterans, knowledge of group dynamics and awareness of the principles of supported employment. Excellent organizational and time management skills with a deadline-oriented mindset. Strong written and oral communication skills employing the English language. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other common desktop applications. Ability to track all program activities via the web-based reporting system. Able to work with diverse populations and to collaborate successfully with others. Sound judgment and decision-making ability. Ability to interact with the public, local businesses and employers with and on behalf of the consumer is essential. Familiar with mental health, substance abuse, and dual diagnosis issues and dynamics. Able to meet all documentation requirements. Valid drivers’ license with a good driving history and access to reliable transportation.


Duties and Responsibilities

Provide employment services to veterans who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness in Middlesex, New London, and New Haven Counties. Coordinate and attend meetings with the veteran, support team, community and local business providers as necessary or assigned. Engage the services of other agencies as appropriate to meet veteran needs. Engages veterans and establishes trusting, collaborative relationships directed toward the goal of competitive employment. Assesses client’s employment functioning on an ongoing basis utilizing background information and work experiences. Provide outreach, assessment, intakes and follow-up services to enhance employment and retention for nine months. Develop a job driven employment and training service plan for each veteran. Provides education and support to employers as agreed upon by clients that may include negotiating job accommodations and follow-along contact with the employer. Managing a caseload of 40 unduplicated Veteran clients per annum, with 15 job placements. Attend regularly scheduled supervision, team or staff meetings as requested including monthly meetings with the SSVF Grant Manager as directed. Play an integral role in preparing for SSVF audits. Monitor all cases assigned and complete all documentation/charting required. Assist with the delivery of the Employment Enrichment Center Groups as assigned. Other related duties as assigned. Outreach and recruitment of businesses in all three counties.

Salary Range: $17.30 to $19.23 per hour plus excellent benefits

Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. flexibility required
