About Our John S. Martinez Community Service Awardees

This annual award is named in honor of the late State Representative, John S. Martinez, who was an employee of Columbus House and later served as a board member. John spent his life in service to others and was an inspiration to us all.

Penelope Jordan: For Penelope’s 6th birthday she had an idea, and it wasn’t a typical birthday party.

“When I was little, I was turning 6 and wanted to do a lemonade stand,” said Penelope. “I want to give the money to people that don’t have homes. With the support of her family, Penelope has spent her past three birthdays making a difference for others through her lemonade stand fundraiser for Columbus House.  Between her profits and matching gifts from her father’s employer, Best Buy, she has raised nearly $8,000. Her compassionate and entrepreneurial spirit, selflessness, and commitment to helping people experiencing homelessness inspires us all and we are so grateful to Penelope for all her efforts.

The Foote School: For over 13 years, The Foote School students, teachers, and administration have held our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness in their hearts and minds, and we are so thankful for their continuing partnership. The Foote School exemplifies a community of students, teachers, families, and school administrators working together to show care and enhance the lives of their most vulnerable neighbors. For their Valentine’s gift card collections, "fill a Van" snack collections, visits to our shelter, an art installation in our dining room…. and so many other forms of support over the years – we are eternally grateful!

Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals is a long-time supporter of the Wallingford Emergency Shelter. Their generous matching contribution in 2014 was essential to building the two units of family shelter that provide a safe space for families  experiencing homelessness. Whether it be through financial contributions, collections for wish list items, holiday gift baskets for our family shelter, welcome kits for Abraham’s Tent participants, or an Appalachian Trail trek that raised over $25,000- we are grateful for the many ways they support our mission! Their dedication is invaluable, and we are proud to count Ulbrich Stainless Steels & Special Metals among our partners in ending homelessness.
