Raising $20,000 for our Middlesex Family Shelter!
January 31, 2014
We are grateful to all who helped make this year’s ‘Chocolate to the Rescue!’ so special, raising $20,000 for our Middlesex Family Shelter!
Around 225 attendees came out to Water’s Edge Resort and Spa on January 26th to sample, and vote for their favorite, chocolate creations from an array of the region’s finest chocolate delicacies. Participating restaurants, bakeries, caterers and chocolatiers included The Drunkin Cupcake, J.A.M.S.S. Restaurant, Jordan Caterers, Purple Carrot Foods, Scratch Baking, Splash/Madison Chocolates, Sweet Sage Bakery, Tschudin Chocolates, and Water’s Edge. Also on-hand for judging was our panel of experts, including Lee White, food editor & restaurant reviewer; Joan Gordon, Chef and restaurant reviewer; and Tommy Juliano, Pastry chef. Joining us for a third year, our Emcee Jim Masters, national & local TV and radio personality, announced the winners. Splash/Madison Chocolates of Guilford took home the People's Choice Award for Most Amazing Chocolate Flavor with a Seven Layer Bar Martini and Grand Cru Truffle Cupcake. Purple Carrot Foods of Colebrook scored the People's Choice Award for Most Creative Chocolate Creation with a “Chocolate ‘Bowl’ Sunday” which included White Chocolate Mac and Cheese! Jordan Caterers, Cheshire, won the experts approval with her “Winter Festival” of fun & festive chocolate carnival food, and took home the Critics' Choice Award for Most Creative Chocolate Creation. And, last, but certainly not least, Sweet Sage Bakery of Middlefield impressed the experts with a “Brownie Bistro,” “Chocolate Cherry Bread,” and “Dark Chocolate Lemon Scone,” winning the Critics' Choice Award for Most Amazing Chocolate Flavor. Check out photos of our winners and their creations HERE !
In addition to the silent auction and wine grab bag, guests were given the opportunity to donate a “Welcome Kit” for families moving out of the shelter and into their own place. Our “Welcome Kits” initiative provides basic household necessities to families when starting out in a new home. In total, $1,100 was raised!
Thank you again to our wonderful event sponsors Edible Arrangements, Guilford Savings Bank, Citizens Bank, and Jeanne Steiner; and to Harbor News, our Print Media Sponsor. Thank you also to Bill De Kine, of De Kine Photo LLC, for graciously photographing the event.
Our Middlesex Family Shelter has been providing Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing and related services to homeless families with children since 1988. Over 50 homeless families with as many as 150 children were served last year. All funds raised at ‘Chocolate to the Rescue!’ will help provide a safe place for homeless children and their families to stay while we help them secure suitable housing.
